A Kundli (also called Janam Patrika, Janam Kundali, or birth chart) is the foundational document of Vedic astrology. It is a diagram showing the exact positions of the Sun, Moon, and seven other celestial bodies at the precise moment and location of your birth, mapped onto the 12 houses of the zodiac.

Reading a Kundli is a lifelong practice — seasoned astrologers spend decades refining their interpretations. But you do not need to master it to extract meaningful insight. This guide gives you the foundations: what the 12 houses represent, what the 9 planets signify, and how to begin making sense of their combinations.

The Ascendant (Lagna) — Your Chart's Foundation

The most important point in your Kundli is the Lagna — the Ascendant. This is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It changes approximately every two hours, making it specific to your birth time in a way that even your Moon sign is not.

The Lagna determines:

  • Which sign falls in your 1st house — and therefore which sign falls in all 12 houses
  • Your physical constitution (sharira), general health, and outward personality
  • Your overall outlook on life and the lens through which you experience the world
  • The Lagna lord — the ruling planet of your Ascendant sign, which becomes highly significant throughout your chart reading

Without an accurate birth time, you cannot determine your Lagna. Even a 15-minute error can shift the Ascendant. If you do not know your exact birth time, reading from your Moon sign (Janma Rashi) is the standard alternative in Vedic astrology.

The 12 Houses — What Each One Rules

The 12 houses are fixed divisions of your chart, each governing a specific area of life. They are counted from your Ascendant sign:

The 1st, 5th, and 9th houses form the Dharma Trikona (triangle of purpose). The 2nd, 6th, and 10th form the Artha Trikona (wealth and work). The 4th, 8th, and 12th form the Moksha Trikona (spiritual liberation). The 3rd, 7th, and 11th form the Kama Trikona (desire and fulfilment).

The 9 Planets (Navagraha) — Who Rules What

Vedic astrology uses nine celestial bodies (seven visible planets plus two lunar nodes):

How to Read a Planet in a House

The interpretation begins with the planet's placement: which house it sits in and which sign occupies that house. The general principle:

Planet + House = The domain of life (house) is infused with the qualities of that planet.

Some examples:

  • Jupiter in the 5th house — Blessings for children, strong intelligence, creative gifts. In Sagittarius or Pisces (own signs), even more powerful.
  • Saturn in the 10th house — Career demands sustained effort but yields lasting results after the age of 36. Discipline and responsibility in professional life.
  • Venus in the 7th house — Marriage is highly significant; spouse tends to be beautiful or artistically inclined. Strong focus on partnership.
  • Rahu in the 1st house — Unconventional personality, desire for foreign experiences, powerful ambition. Can cause identity confusion early in life.
  • Moon in the 4th house — Deep emotional attachment to home, mother, and homeland. Strong domestic instincts; comfort found in familiar surroundings.

Strong vs Weak Planets

A planet's strength (called Bala or Shadbala) depends on the sign it occupies:

  • Own sign (e.g., Sun in Leo) — The planet is in its own home. Comfortable, expressive, and strong.
  • Exalted sign — Maximum strength. Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra.
  • Debilitated sign — Minimum strength. The opposite sign from exaltation. E.g., Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio.
  • Friendly sign — Planets have natural friendships and enmities. Jupiter in a sign ruled by Sun or Moon (natural friends) performs well.
  • Enemy sign — Sun in Saturn's sign (Capricorn or Aquarius) faces challenges; Saturn is Sun's natural enemy.

A debilitated planet does not mean misfortune — it means the planet must work harder to express its qualities, and the native must put in conscious effort in that area of life.

The Vimshottari Dasha — When Events Happen

Knowing the planetary positions in your chart tells you what is present. The Vimshottari Dasha system tells you when those themes activate.

Based on your Janma Nakshatra, you begin life in a specific planetary period (Mahadasha). The sequence cycles through all 9 planets over 120 years:

PlanetMahadasha Duration
Ketu7 years
Venus20 years
Sun6 years
Moon10 years
Mars7 years
Rahu18 years
Jupiter16 years
Saturn19 years
Mercury17 years

If Jupiter is strong in your chart (own sign, exalted, or well-placed in a good house), your Jupiter Mahadasha (16 years) will be a period of growth, wisdom, children, and good fortune. If Saturn is challenged but you are in Saturn Mahadasha, it is a period requiring discipline and patience — but one that ultimately builds something lasting.

Your First Step: Generate Your Kundli

To read your Kundli you need three pieces of information: your date of birth, your time of birth (as precise as possible), and your city of birth. CosmosPandit uses your birth details to calculate your Lagna, Moon sign, Nakshatra, and all 9 planet positions — along with your current Vimshottari Dasha sequence.

The North Indian chart style (the diamond-grid layout) is the most widely used format in India. CosmosPandit uses this format by default.

Start by identifying just three things in your chart: (1) your Lagna sign, (2) your Moon sign, and (3) which house Jupiter occupies. These three alone will give you meaningful insight into your personality, emotional nature, and where blessings flow most easily in your life.
